Qatar & Maldives

This week I did two of the smallest countries in Asia: Qatar and Maldives. I am trying to created a good balance of different kinds of dishes meaning breakfast, snacks, main dishes, side dishes, and drinks. This way my adventure fits into our budget. So far, everything has fit perfectly.

This week, I decided to do a play on breakfast. I created my own recipes based on my research and the result came out great. I made a spiced coffee (Qatar) and coconut flatbread with a coconut orange sauce. I served it will strawberries and it all worked out wonderfully.

Qatar

Original Word: Desert

New Word: Peninsula

Nationality: Qatari

Language: Arabic

Religion: Muslim (77.5%)

Population: 1,951,581

147th largest population in the world.

Capital: Doha

 

Qahwa Helw (Sweet Coffee)

3 tbsp ground coffee

pinch cinnamon

pinch saffron

2 cardamom pods, remove seeds from pods /or pinch ground cardamom

orange zest, 1/2 of the fruit

3 cups boiling water

sugar to taste

Using a french press, add all of the ingredients and let steep for 4 minutes. Press everything down. If using a coffee maker, brew coffee. In a heat resistant pot with a lid, add spices, zest, and coffee, cover and steep for a few minutes. Serve with sugar.

Maldives

Original Word: Vacation

New Word: 26 Atoll (coral islands)

Nationality: Maldivian

Language: Dhivehi

Religion: Sunni Muslim

Population: 394,451

176th largest population in the world.

Capital: Male

 

Huni Roshi (coconut flatbread)

1 1/2 cup flour, additional for kneading

1/2 cup grated coconut (unsweetened)

1/2 cup coconut milk

pinch salt

orange zest, 1/2 of the fruit

Mix all ingredients together and knead till combined. Roll into flatbreads. Fry in a non stick pan without oil.

I served mine with a coconut sauce. I mixed 1/2 cup coconut milk, 1/2 orange juice, and a tsp sugar.
